The Delta Trick: How to Save on Flights You’ve Already Booked
1. Access Your Booked Flight: Log into your Delta account and find the flight you’ve already booked. Click on the “change or add flights” option.
2. Start the Flight Change Process: The system will load the flights you already have. Click on “start flight change.”
3. Select Your Flights: You’ll see your flights listed. Select the checkboxes next to the flights you want to change, then click “find new flight.“
4. Choose Your Original Flight: From the list of available flights, scroll down to find your original flight and select it. Do this for each leg of your journey. (You can also change your flight if you’d prefer to do so)
5. Review and Complete Your Purchase: Scroll to the bottom of the page to see your original flight and the new flight. If the new flight is cheaper, click “complete purchase.”

1. Does this work with basic economy tickets?
No, this does not work with basic economy tickets. I recommend that you purchase a main cabin ticket when you book on Delta so that you have more flexibility to change your flight, can select your own seats, as well as earn Skymiles and Medallion Qualification Miles. If flight prices go down, you may end up saving enough money to make it as affordable as if you had booked a basic economy ticket.
2. Does this work with other airlines?
Yes, this works with several other airlines. There are several comments on the viral TikTok video from viewers who have successfully used this trick with Southwest, United, American Airlines, and others.
3. Does this work with award tickets?
Yes, this does work with award tickets. The miles that you book with Delta will get redeposited right back into your SkyMiles account.
4. How is the price difference refunded?
The difference in the price of the flight will be given back to you as an e-credit, which you can find in the Delta app under “my wallet”. Be sure to use this e-credit for a future flight before it expires. The expiration date can be found in the same location. If you booked a refundable fare, you can have the money refunded to the card you used to purchase your flight.
5. Does this work for all cabins?
This works for all cabins except basic economy. If you have a Delta One ticket, first class, Premium Select, or Comfort Plus, make sure that when you go to select the flights, you are looking at the top of the screen where it says “main cabin, premium select, Comfort +, etc., and select the cabin that you’re already in to see if there’s a price difference.
