I spent 48 hours solo between these two cities in early April, and it was one of the most restorative UK weekends I’ve had.  The secret?  Treating the two cities as a wellness pair.  I used Bristol for energy and Bath for restoration.  

This is the kind of itinerary that matches my travel style, so if you like to take your time and wander while you’re on a solo trip, here’s exactly how I’d plan your relaxing weekend in Bath and Bristol.

Why Bath AND Bristol? (And Why In This Order)

Many people visit one or the other, but they’re only 45 minutes apart, so combining them on the same trip gives you the best of both worlds.

Bristol is a creative, edgy, waterfront city.   You’ll find street art, independent restaurants, a cool harbor, and Clifton Village, one of the most beautiful urban neighborhoods in England. It’s full of energy and gives you something to explore.

Bath has that Georgian grandeur, Roman history, and world-class spa culture. It’s the kind of city where you slow down the second you arrive.  In Bath, even the architecture forces you to linger. The city absolutely restores you.

I suggest visiting Bristol first and then heading to Bath.  This way, you can enjoy the energy of Bristol and then arrive in Bath ready to relax.   

DAY 1: Arriving via Berkeley Castle → Bristol

Morning: Berkeley Castle (Optional But Highly Recommended)

If you’re driving from the Midlands, there is one detour I recommend: Berkeley Castle.

Lived in continuously since 1153, Berkeley Castle is one of the oldest inhabited castles in England.  I was shocked to find out that there are still Berkeleys living there today.

The gardens are beautiful, the history is extraordinary, and a visit takes about an hour. I almost skipped it and I’m so glad I didn’t.  

Practical Info:   Berkeley, Gloucestershire. The castle is open to the public seasonally, so check their website for current hours.

Allow 1-1.5 hours.

Afternoon: Bristol Harborside

Park near the harbor and wander toward the water.  This is Bristol’s most photogenic area.  Grab lunch at one of the independent restaurants along the waterfront and take your time. If it’s a nice day, get a coffee or food to go and sit along the River Avon.

If you’re interested in learning more about Bristol’s history, stop at M Shed.  This is a free museum right on the along the water.  It’s full of artifacts and stories that share the evolution of Bristol and its people.  

Practical Info:   M Shed has free entry. 

Late Afternoon: St. Nicholas Market and Bristol City Centre

Walk  from the harbor to  the city center and you’ll find St. Nicholas Market.  This covered market dates all the way back to 1743.  It’s a vibe, it’s full of independent food stalls and artisan vendors, and it’s a great place to pick up a snack or browse for something unique.  It even had a stall that was purely hot sauce.  The surrounding streets are full of beautiful architecture, so be sure to look up so you can admire it.  

Practical Info:   Check market days before visiting.  Wed–Sat will be busiest.

Late Afternoon: Clifton Village & Clifton Suspension Bridge

I cannot even explain how much I love Clifton Village.

This neighborhood was full of independent cafés, Georgian terraces, and boutique shops and it almost reminded me of an antique San Francisco.  It’s up the hill from the Bristol city center, so if you want to be in a more relaxed atmosphere, this is where you want to stay.   It’s the kind of place you want to spend a slow afternoon.

I checked into the Rodney Hotel in Clifton Village and spent an hour just walking the streets before heading to the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

The bridge is about a 5–10 minute walk from Clifton Village and it’s absolutely worth visiting.  I recommend going across and back to get the full experience.   The views of the Avon Gorge are impressive and even though I’m not a fan of heights, I still loved it.

Practical Info:   The bridge is free to walk across but costs £1 to drive across.  

Where to Stay in Bristol: The Rodney Hotel, Clifton Village

I stayed at The Rodney Hotel and would definitely recommend it.  It’s boutique, independently owned, and in a prime location just steps away from the very center of the village.  Be sure to book a room in advance as it fills up quickly.

Evening: Dinner at No. 4 Clifton Village (in The Rodney Hotel)

No. 4 Clifton Village is an award-winning Modern European restaurant inside the Rodney Hotel. It was recently refurbished and the menu is excellent.  I dined on a Tuesday when they had their 2 courses for £20 menu.  The best part?  All I had to do was walk down one flight of stairs to get there.

Practical Info:   Book ahead even if you’re a hotel guest. It fills up, especially on weekends.

DAY 2: Bristol Lido → Bath

Morning: Bristol Lido

This was one of my favorite experiences of the whole trip because I felt like I was transported back into the 1950s.

Bristol Lido is a beautifully restored Victorian swimming pool in the middle of Clifton, with a sauna, steam room, and cold plunge. You can also book massages or dine at the on-site restaurant while you’re there. 

I decided to try and get the full experience, so I did laps in the heated outdoor pool, spent a short time in the sauna, a long time in the steam room, and opted out of the cold plunge (no regrets). The whole experience here was just so refreshing and was a great way to interact with locals.  It was exactly what solo travel should feel like.

Practical Info:   Book your session in advance online. Bring your own swimwear and sandals or flip flops.   Non-members can book a 2-hour session for £25-£30, depending on when you go.

Afternoon: Drive to Bath (45 minutes)

It’s an easy 45 minute drive from Bristol to Bath (approximately).  The moment you arrive in Bath’s city centre you’ll understand immediately why it has UNESCO World Heritage status.  It’s breathtaking.

The honey-colored stone and the Georgian architecture makes you feel like you’re in a scene in Bridgerton.   Check into your hotel and then just wander.  Let the city calm your nervous system.

Where to Stay in Bath: Eight Hotel

I stayed at Eight Hotel in Bath city centre and it was stunning. I had a large room overlooking a private courtyard with a standalone bathtub (right in the middle of the room!).  My room included a sitting area, desk, and they even had a selection of books available to read.  I loved that idea!  Hotel Eight is boutique, centrally located, and the kind of hotel that makes it hard to leave the room..

Practical Info:   If you have a car, you can park at the SouthGate Car Park and walk approximately 5 minutes to the hotel.  The hotel is walking distance to the  Roman Baths and Thermae Bath Spa.

Late Afternoon: The Roman Baths

My single strongest tip for the Roman Baths:  go in the late afternoon if you can.  I showed up with an hour left before they closed and felt like I had enough time to explore.  You may want to leave a little more time if you’re a history buff.

An audio guide is available to listen to as walk through each exhibit.  It’s hard to imagine that 2,000 years of history is preserved here 

Practical Info:   Book tickets online in advance.  Admission is £18–22 for adults and closes in the early evening so check current times.

Evening: Dinner at Bath Pizza Company

Bath Pizza Company is located inside Green Park Station, a converted Victorian railway station.   This place is just COOL.  The second I walked in, I was welcomed with a kind staff and live music.  There’s soaring ceilings, an energetic atmosphere, your favorite songs playing, and really good pizza.  I didn’t expect to find great pizza here, but Bath Pizza Company impressed me.

My note:  Coming from someone who is very particular about pizza (Italian-American from NJ)… the pizza was excellent.

Practical Info:   Inside Green Park Station. Book ahead on the weekends.

Day 3: The Slow Morning in Bath

Morning: Thermae Bath Spa

This is the main event.  Bath is on every serious spa-travel list in Europe, and the Thermae Bath spa is one of the reasons why.

Here, you can bathe in the same mineral-rich thermal waters that have been flowing here since Roman times.  Then contrast that with a rooftop infinity pool with panoramic views over the city, a full thermal suite, and green rolling hills beyond the city.  It’s a one-of-a-kind atmosphere that made my two hour session feel like 15 minutes.

Go early and if you can visit on a weekday, I would recommend that as well in order to avoid large crowds. 

Practical Info:   It opens at 9am. Book well in advance because sessions sell out.   You can add other wellness treatments to your session. 

Late Morning: Parade Gardens & The River Avon

If you have a beautiful morning (and in early spring you might get lucky), walk to Parade Gardens overlooking the River Avon.  Walk aimlessly, get a coffee, find a bench, and sit. Watch Bath go about its day.  People watching is my favorite thing to do in a new city.

The best moments in a new city are always the unplanned ones, and Bath is the perfect city for that kind of slow wandering.  This is the ideal way to end the trip.

Practical Tips Before You Go

When to visit:   For lighter crowds, you can visit in the winter, but I’d recommend trying to visit during shoulder seasons (Late March – April or late Sept – Oct).   Avoid school holidays.

Getting around: 

• If you have a car:  A car gives you maximum flexibility, especially for Berkeley Castle.  It takes about 45 minutes to drive between Bristol and Bath.  Once you get to each city, they’re pretty walkable with the exception of getting up to Clifton (a car is easiest).  
• If you don’t have a car:  there’s a train or bus that goes between Bath and Bristol.  If you’re coming to/from London, you can get to either city by train in about 90 minutes.  

What to book in advance: 

• Thermae Bath Spa (essential)
• Bristol Lido (recommended)
• Roman Baths (recommended)
• All restaurants if you want to ensure you get a table

For solo travelers:  Both cities are extremely solo-friendly and safe.

Lane’s Cottage Overview

If you’re dreaming of a cozy escape in a charming Cotswold town, Lane’s Cottage in Chipping Campden is straight out of a storybook. Located right in the heart of this market town, the 1850s Grade II listed cottage is full of character from the exposed stone walls to the fireplace. It makes for the perfect home base whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, a solo trip, or a girls’ weekend.

Arrival

Getting to Chipping Campden is simple whether you’re driving from London or taking the train to Moreton-in-Marsh (just a 15-minute taxi ride away). Lane’s Cottage is located on the High Street, so everything is walkable—including pubs, bakeries, and little boutiques and shops.

There’s no private parking, but there is free on-street parking. I had no trouble finding a spot on the street, but be aware that it may be more challenging during the busy seasons.

The Cottage

The moment you walk into Lane’s Cottage, you’ll definitely feel like you’re living in a real life holiday. The sitting room is adorable, with cozy seating and an open fire that’s perfect for chilly evenings. I stayed in February and loved curling up here with tea and Netflix after a day of exploring.

The layout is traditional, with the living and dining area at the front, and the kitchen and bathroom in the back of the first floor. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you’d need for meals at home—including a dishwasher and washing machine, which are always a win.

Out back, there’s a multi-level garden and patio with seating and a BBQ. It was still winter when I visited, but I could totally see myself sitting out here in the spring or summer with a glass of wine and some snacks.

Upstairs are two bedrooms: one with a beautiful stone wall detail and view of the main street, and another with a full bed and its own character-filled stone feature wall. The bedding was incredibly comfortable and I loved having a vanity for doing my hair and makeup each day.

Bonus: the whole place is dog-friendly, so you don’t have to leave your pup behind.

Takeaway

Lane’s Cottage is exactly what I picture when I think of a quintessential Cotswold cottage. It’s charming, walkable, cozy, and filled with little details that make it special. Whether you’re traveling solo (like me!) or visiting with a friend or partner, this place is a must-book.

Minnow Cottage Overview

If you’ve always wanted to channel your inner Cameron Diaz and escape reality, you’ll absolutely feel like you’re in “The Holiday” in this idyllic Cotswold Cottage. This one bedroom/one bathroom home truly is “an enchanting oasis of tranquility” that is just waiting for you.

Arrival

Getting to the cottage is pretty straightforward. If you fly into London, you can rent a car and drive approximately 90 minutes to Chalford, or there is a bus option. I, personally, would recommend driving as it’s much easier to get around the Cotswolds with a car. 

The Cottage

The cottage is detached with parking in front. There are 3 stories: the lower level is a kitchen/dining area that leads to an outdoor garden area, the main level has the living area with a wood burning furnace and workspace, and the upstairs is where you’ll find the bedroom and bathroom.

If you’re looking for cozy, you’ll definitely find it at the Minnow Cottage.

Terry’s Personal Tips for Visiting the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market

After personally visiting the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market in 2023, I have the following tips to share from experience.

Do the Torchlight Walk

The most memorable experience for me was the torchlight walk to the market with Schneeschuh Akademie. There was still some snow on the ground and the hike took place just as the sun was getting ready to set, which made it feel so cozy and special.

Bring Cash

Many stalls do NOT take credit cards, so be sure to have plenty of cash (Euro, not other currencies) to buy whatever you need. 

Buy Tickets in Advance

You can’t buy tickets to the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market on site or at the last minute. In 2024, these tickets were sold out sooner than in 2023, so if you’re planning to go in 2025, set reminders for yourself to check their website every so often.

Tickets aren’t available too far in advance (typically mid-October), so you’ll have to check in to see when they’re available for sale on the official website. You may also want to subscribe to the newsletter for Hochschwarzwald because they will most likely announce when tickets are available for sale in the future.

Stay Nearby

I stayed at a fantastic hotel in Titisee, Germany called Coucou Hotel. It’s located RIGHT at the train station, just two stops from the Hinterzarten station. This made getting to and from the meeting point for the torchlight walk very easy. The hotel had modern rooms, a delicious breakfast buffet, and an inviting restaurant that is perfect for dinner or some evening drinks.

Normally, I would be skeptical of a hotel so close to a train station, but the town of Titisee is so safe and charming. I highly recommend it. 

Where is the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market Located?

One of the reasons the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market is so unique is because it’s in the Black Forest Highlands, removed from larger, more popular (and touristy) German cities. It takes more effort to get there, and because of this, you’re rewarded with one of the most cozy markets you’ll find.  I visited this Christmas on my 2023 solo trip to Germany for all things Christmas markets, and it quickly became my favorite market of the entire trip.

How to Get to the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market

Getting to the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market is easier than it may sound. There are three options for getting there. You can also see more specific details on the official website.

Torchlight Hike:

The BEST way to access the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market is to go on a Torchlight Hike with Schneeschuh Akademie. This is how I visited the market in 2023.  To get back to Hinterzarten, the torchlight walk ticket includes a return on one of the shuttle buses.

On Foot

There is a winter hiking trail from Hinterzarten to the market that takes about 45 minutes.

Train/Bus 

Take a train to the nearby towns of Hinterzarten or Himmelreich. From there, hop on the shuttle bus service that runs directly to the market.

Shuttle bus tickets must be booked in advance.

Check the shuttle schedule on the official website for convenience.

Car:

There are limited spaces to park at the market and they must be reserved in advance. There are also public parking options at shuttle stations. You can park there and take the shuttle to the market.

What to Expect at the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market

Atmosphere & Entertainment

The atmosphere at the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market is what makes it so unique. Set underneath a stone viaduct that is illuminated with colored lights, you’ll find yourself looking up periodically to see a train pass overhead. Windows lit and music filling the air around you, it feels like you’re truly in a scene out of a movie.

Check the weather before your visit because it could be chilly! Layers are key. If you want some suggestions for what to pack, you can find my packing list here.

What Stalls Will Be There?

You will not leave hungry or without souvenirs when you visit the market. There are stall with all kinds of treats from glühwein (hot mulled wine) and non-alcoholic drinks to bratwursts, flammkuchen, (flat-bread style pizza found in Germany) and more, including various cuts of meat you can buy to bring home.

You’ll also find stands selling handmade Christmas decorations, jewelry, soaps, winter accessories, and other items that would make a fantastic gift or a memory for yourself.

Activities for Kids

If you’re traveling with young ones, there are plenty of opportunities for entertainment. At the market, you can find a Christmas Post Office where postcards can be sent to Santa.

Within the gorge on the outside of the main area of market stalls, there’s an illuminated Nativity Trail providing information about the birth of Jesus. Be sure to venture out to see not only the trail, but the beauty of the surrounding forest.

You can stay here for under 20 Euro a night in their Camping Ground rooms or choose to have more room in their deluxe suite, which has a bedroom, living area, kitchenette, and bathroom complete with a tub.

The room I stayed in was cozy, featuring a comfortable bed and brand new bathroom. The large windows allowed for plenty of natural light, and there were thoughtful artistic touches.

Amenities

Enjoy a drink with a view at Villa Viva’s RoofDrop Bar or dine downstairs at Viva Cantina, which has a delicious menu and drink options to choose from. I highly recommend the arancini! The breakfast in the mornings was one of the highlights of my stay as the food was delicious and there were many different options available.

Vintage Fiat 500 Tour of Chianti Overview

Live out your Italian dreams and go on an epic vintage Fiat 500 tour of Chianti with a wine tasting and lunch included. This 4 hour experience is one that you’ll be telling all of your friends about when you come back from your trip to Italy.

Not only do you get to ride around in a vintage Fiat 500 with a private driver, but you’ll also stop at a beautiful winery where you’ll have a full lunch and tasting.

Getting to the Meeting Point

You’ll meet your driver at Porta Romana where you’ll begin your journey into the Tuscan countryside. To navigate to the meeting point, I highly recommend using Citymapper to find the best route. Our driver and host, Andrea, was very easy to communicate with. You’ll end at the same location as you started.

The Experience

This experience is perfect for anybody who enjoys being a passenger princess (or prince) and stunning views of the Italian countryside. As you make your way out of Florence, you’ll be greeted by the hills of Tuscany covered with olive trees and vineyards. If the weather is favorable, your driver may put the top down on the Fiat, which makes it an even more memorable experience.

The destination is a family-owned winery where you’ll enjoy a full lunch and wine pairing. The winery may vary for each individual tour, but we visited Luiano Winery, which was fabulous. They serve multiple small plates, which is the perfect amount of food, and 4 wines to taste with it. After lunch, you’ll have a tour of the wine cellar before heading back to the Fiat 500.

The ride back to Florence will give you some time to digest and take in the Chianti region. As you get closer to the city, you may get lucky with some epic views of the city from the hills.

All Tour Options

There are other options for this tour that you can choose from. The basic tour is a 2 hour ride around Chianti, but I chose to book the longer tour that included the wine tasting and lunch.

Takeaway

For anybody who loves wine, Italian food, and riding around in a classic car, this vintage Fiat 500 tour of Chianti is a must-do while you’re visiting Florence. Our guide, Andrea, was so much fun and made the experience one that will never be forgotten. I can’t recommend this tour enough.

An Overview of the Nest

If you’re visiting Italy and want to stay away from the hustle and bustle, you’ll love relaxing at this cozy Tuscan farmhouse near Florence. The Nest was previously a barn until it was restored by its owners, Luca and Lorenzo. They put every detail into it that you can imagine, transforming it into a Tuscan oasis with a traditional vibe and modern amenities.

Arrival

You’ll definitely need to rent a car when you’re staying at The Nest. The drive to the nearest train station is approximately 5 minutes. From there, it’s a 15 minute train ride to the center of Florence. The Nest is located on private property, right next to Luca and Lorenzo’s home where they host a cooking class several times a week. 

Your Hosts:  Luca and Lorenzo

The Nest used to be an old barn until Luca and Lorenzo decided to restore it.   It is located on their land and just a short walk from their home, where they host authentic cooking classes.  

Luca and Lorenzo each had careers in fashion and the arts before decided to live out their dream of sharing their family recipes through cooking classes in their home.  Learn more about their story here.

I first met Luca and Lorenzo in 2022 after booking their cooking class and it was truly one of the best days I’ve had on all my trips to Italy.  Their ability to make everybody feel welcome, their humor, their creativity…I just knew this wouldn’t be the last time I would see them.

Everybody who stays at The Nest or learns how to make pasta from Luca and Lorenzo will ultimately leave as a friend with incredible stories to tell.

The Nest

Greeting you upon arrival at The Nest is a massive pool.  Here you can enjoy some Vitamin D with views of the olive trees, particularly if you’re visiting during warmer months. It’s the perfect spot to stay cool during the height of summer.

To the left of the pool, you’ll find a rustic table set under a canopy of string lights. It’s the perfect spot to have dinner or converse over a bottle of wine.

When you enter the home, you’ll be astounded by the large rooms, high ceilings, and unique artwork. The primary bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, you’ll find another massive bedroom overlooking the pool, a third bedroom contains a set of bunk beds (perfect for kids), and a full bathroom with a shower. The kitchen is fully equipped, so you can spend plenty of time at home cooking.

Takeaway

Do you want to enjoy Tuscany from a place where you can experience the stillness of nature and sunbathe amongst the olive trees? The Nest is the perfect home base for you to explore Florence, Chianti, and other regions of Tuscany.

And if you want to learn how to cook the most delicious pasta and tiramisu, you definitely need to book Luca and Lorenzo’s cooking class. It’s the best!

Hike to a Secret Lake Near Lucerne, Switzerland

The best tours and experiences are those that are unique, which is why this private day trip with Roberto from Lucerne to a secret lake needs to be on your Switzerland bucket list. You’ll spend the day riding a gondola, going on an easy hike, and eating fondue with views of cows, mountains, green grass, and the stunning lake.

Getting to the Meeting Point

Your guide, Roberto, picks you up from your hotel in the morning, making it incredibly easy to start the tour. It’s a 45 minute drive to the gondola that will take you up to the top of a mountain. From here, it’s an easy 30 minute down-hill hike (really a walk) to get to the secret lake.

The Experience

On the drive from Lucerne to the gondola, you’ll get to know your tour guide, Roberto. He’s a local who lives and breathes Switzerland and knows all of the best places to show his clients both in and out of the main tourist destinations.Once you arrive at the gondola, you’ll ride it up to the top of a mountain, taking in the gorgeous Swiss views on the way. When you get off, it’s an incredibly easy walk to get to the “secret lake” where you’ll stop to enjoy a fondue picnic, have time to get photos, and just relax and enjoy the peaceful beauty that Switzerland has to offer.After lunch, it’s a 45 minute drive to another gondola that you’ll take back down the mountain and then return to Lucerne.

Takeaway

If you’re looking to spend the day with a local and see some of the best hidden gems of Switzerland, you will love a day trip to the secret lake with Roberto. It was one of the highlights of my trip.

Tabby Shack SSI Overview

If you’re planning a visit to Saint Simons Island, GA and looking for a place to stay, I know the cutest house for you to rent. Located on the south end of SSI, Tabby Shack exudes a breezy, coastal charm that captures the essence of island living. If you’re looking for comfortable beach vibes, this is the rental house for you.

Arrival

Checking in to Tabby Shack is incredibly easy and contactless, as the door has a code that is programmed for each new set of guests. Kelly and Adam are quick to communicate if there are any issues.

Your Hosts

Kelly and Adam are personal friends of mine; I met Kelly in the Penn State Atlanta alumni group in 2006. Residents of Atlanta, Kelly and Adam love coming to SSI with their son. They take tremendous pride in their home and they’re excited to share it with their guests.

The Home

Tabby Shack was completely renovated in 2021 and has a casual coastal vibe. You’ll enter the house in a beautifully decorated mudroom that opens up to a large family room and dining/kitchen area. Every piece of furniture, lamp, and decoration sets the tone for a relaxing getaway.

With a large sectional and giant 4K large screen TV, you can enjoy a cozy night in on days where the weather isn’t ideal. The fully-equipped kitchen allows you to have home-cooked meals if you don’t want to venture out.

The primary bedroom includes a king-sized bed and an oasis-like bathroom with a massive updated shower. Down the hall you’ll find two additional bedrooms: one with a queen-sized bed and the other with twin beds, perfect for kids. Next to these is a full bathroom with a tub shower.

Outside

The side patio has a gas grill and table so you can enjoy lunch or dinner, but I think the best part of the house may just be the fenced in backyard. With a heated pool (heating is an additional fee) and various seating options, you’ll really feel like you’re on vacation.

There are two lounge chairs, a large dining table, and an adorable area under one of the palm trees where you can sit and enjoy the view of the pool. If you need to rinse off, there’s a really cool outdoor shower that is built onto a classic surfboard.

At night, the pool and palm trees are illuminated, creating the perfect setting to enjoy drinks or a good book.
